Brighton TTC Crowned SBL Premier Division Champions in Dominant Display
Brighton TTC made history on Saturday, clinching the SBL Premier Division title with a convincing 6-1 victory over BATTS in a title-deciding match played at the Brighton Dome in front of over 400 cheering supporters. The trophy-winning performance was spearheaded by the Brighton trio of Tom Jarvis, Alex Naumi, and David Andersson.
Jarvis and Naumi Set the Tone
Jarvis, who earned his second player of the match award in consecutive rounds, set the tone early with a confident 3-0 win over Jack Bennett. Naumi then followed suit, dispatching Chris Doran in three straight games. The Bennett brothers were unable to withstand the Naumi/Andersson pairing in the doubles, succumbing 11-6, 11-4, 11-5.
Bennett Manages Consolation Victory
While Jack Bennett managed to get the visitors on the board by defeating Andersson in four games, the comeback was short-lived. Jarvis sealed the overall 4-1 victory for Brighton by beating Doran, ensuring the league trophy found its home on the south coast for the very first time. Andersson and Naumi then rounded out the dominant performance by securing wins over Jack and Josh Bennett respectively, leaving Brighton with an 8-1 record and the Premier Division champions’ title.
Ormesby Finish Runners-Up
Elsewhere, Ormesby ended the season in second place, just a single victory shy of the title, after recording a 6-1 win over Ormeau. Their strong squad, led by Graeme Barella and Adam Webster, proved too much for the less experienced Ormeau side, despite some close-fought encounters.
Drumchapel Glasgow and TableTennisDaily Battle for Survival
At the other end of the table, Drumchapel Glasgow and TableTennisDaily fought a thrilling 4-3 battle to avoid relegation. Ultimately, it was the away team of Callum Evans, Umair Mauthoor, and Daniel Ives who emerged victorious, ensuring they would remain in the Premier Division for the next season.
“The dominant performance by Brighton TTC in claiming the league title has undoubtedly set the stage for an exciting and unpredictable finale to the 2023/24 season.”
The season culminates with the SBL Premier Cup, a knockout competition that gives teams a chance to secure a league and cup double. The first-round fixtures have been drawn, with the action set to take place on the weekend of June 1-2 at the Inverclyde National Sports Centre.
