Phoebe O’Brien Shines at Ormesby Cadet 2 Star Championships
On July 7th, the Ormesby Cadet 2 Star Championships, hosted at the club on Teesside, saw Phoebe O’Brien of Scarborough emerge as the standout performer. The 13-year-old table tennis prodigy claimed victory in the U13 girls’ singles, defeating Harriet Goodwin of Ormesby in straight games during the group round-robin phase. Phoebe was tested by two Ormesby players, Aliya Zhuzbayeva and Mila Gao, but ultimately prevailed.
Phoebe’s success didn’t stop there. She also captured the U11 girls’ title, overcoming Mindy Gao of Ormesby in the final. The achievements of the young talent were recognized by Alan Ransome OBE, who presented the medals to the champions.
In the U15 boys’ category, Adam Watson from Newcastle clinched the title in a three-player countback. He topped Ormesby’s Jack Buckley, who finished second, and Charl Myburgh from NETTS, who secured third place. Watson defeated Myburgh in straight sets, while Myburgh edged out Buckley 11-8 in the decisive fifth game, only to be bested by Watson 3-1.
The U15 boys’ Band 2 event was won by Charlie Furness from Northumberland, who overcame Philip Moss from NETTS 3-1 to claim the title.
The U11 boys’ singles saw Darlington’s Isaac Davies emerge victorious, winning all his matches in the group stage. William Fieldhouse from Yorkshire finished as the runner-up, narrowly losing the deciding game 13-11.
