On August 5th, 2024, the Essex County Table Tennis Association proudly announced Martyn Green as the latest recipient of the prestigious Essex Corti Woodcock Award. This prestigious accolade, named in memory of an early pioneer of the sport who championed table tennis both locally and internationally from the 1920s through the 1950s, is a testament to Martyn’s unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to the table tennis community in Essex.
Martyn Green’s Transformative Impact
Martyn Green’s impact on the Essex table tennis landscape has been nothing short of transformative. Since the 2022/23 season, he has been leading the Essex Junior and Cadet teams, showcasing his strong advocacy for the Essex Assessment Trials. This method of identifying and ranking talented young players across the county has remained a cornerstone of Martyn’s approach, despite occasional controversies surrounding the prioritization of these trials over national rankings.
Martyn’s unwavering commitment to the development of Essex’s future table tennis stars has been instrumental. Under his guidance, the number of cadet and junior teams representing the county has doubled over the past two years, with a total of three Essex Cadet teams and three Essex Junior teams now competing in the annual County Championships. Martyn’s leadership was crucial in guiding the Essex Cadet team to the County Premier title this year.

With over 40 years of service on the Colchester Table Tennis Committee and his founding and management of the highly successful Tollgate Table Tennis Club, Martyn Green’s impact on the sport in Essex is truly remarkable.
