Table Tennis for Good: Empowering the Community
On August 6, 2024, Table Tennis for Good, an inspiring initiative aimed at improving lives through the power of table tennis, is set to launch in the heart of St Austell Town Centre on August 20th. The event, running from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, invites all members of the community to pick up a bat, participate in the fun activities, and discover the transformative potential of this inclusive sport.
Spearheaded by Amanda Leonard, the Area Manager South West for Table Tennis England, the project recognizes the profound impact sports can have on addressing broader social issues, such as health and well-being. Table tennis, with its unique blend of accessibility, challenge, and inclusivity, is the perfect medium to bring together individuals of all ages and abilities.

Partnering with the passionate team from the St Austell Table Tennis Club, including Craig, Tim, and Allan, the project has successfully secured a grant from the Cornwall Council’s Capacity Building Fund. This financial support will enable the creation of a robust network of partners across St Austell, paving the way for a diverse range of activities and initiatives.
The launch event promises an array of engaging experiences, from demonstrations and top tips to the opportunity for anyone to pick up a paddle and try their hand at the game. Equipped with the necessary gear and expert guidance, attendees will have the chance to immerse themselves in the joy and camaraderie of table tennis.
Throughout the first phase of the project, the organizers will work closely with consultees and new players to design a comprehensive program of activities. The diary already includes a Ping Pong Parlour in the Town Centre on August 12th, Time 2 Move at Poltair School on August 14th, a Paralympic Taster in the first week of September, and a Women’s Taster Day on September 20th.
The project’s reach extends beyond the initial launch, with plans to collaborate with additional partners, such as Sport in Mind and local schools. The ultimate goal is to promote the holistic benefits of table tennis, inspiring people of all backgrounds to pick up a bat, connect with others, and experience the transformative power of this dynamic sport.
Craig Mehew, the Development Officer of the St Austell Table Tennis Club, expresses the team’s gratitude for the support from the Cornwall Council’s Community Capacity Fund, which has been instrumental in bringing this project to life.
As the Table Tennis for Good initiative takes its first steps, the residents of St Austell can look forward to a day filled with energy, camaraderie, and the opportunity to discover the joy and wellness-enhancing properties of table tennis. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious newcomer, the event welcomes all to join in the celebration of this remarkable sport and its power to positively impact lives.
