Are Black Notley F Primed for an Unlikely Rise in the Braintree Table Tennis League?
Much like Luton Town’s unexpected promotion to the Premier League in 2023 and their subsequent impressive performance, Black Notley F find themselves in a similar position in the Braintree Table Tennis League. Despite gaining promotion only due to the league’s expansion, the team is currently sitting comfortably in fourth place, defying expectations.
While Luton’s Premier League journey saw a swift descent, the Braintree Table Tennis League is not as harsh, with only one team facing relegation. And at the moment, Black Notley F appear safe from that fate, sitting ahead of last year’s division three champions, Netts D, and Yeldham Whitlocks A, both of whom have faced tougher matches and dealt with the absence of key players.
Black Notley F’s latest victory came against a Rayne F team bolstered by the inclusion of Steve Buer. However, Graham Chinnery outlasted Buer in a tense five-game match and won his other two singles to lead his team to a 6-4 win. Meanwhile, Netts D suffered an 8-2 defeat to Notley E, where Jim Davy remained unbeaten.
Elsewhere, Yeldham Whitlocks A secured an excellent draw with league leaders Rayne D, showcasing their resilience. Sudbury Wanderers continued their undefeated run with a 7-3 win over Notley D, while Rayne E edged out Notley C 6-4, with Matthew Brown maintaining his spotless record.
In division one, the top two teams, Rayne A and Netts A, recorded convincing victories, with the former defeating their own B team 9-1 and the latter securing a 10-0 win over Liberal A. However, the standout result came from Liberal C, who continued their impressive start with a 6-4 win over Netts B.
Notley B, meanwhile, gave a debut to 20-year-old Luke Burridge, who started the evening by beating Ken Lewis, a feat that is not easily achieved. However, he could not replicate the success against Karl Baldwin, whose three singles helped Sudbury Nomads secure a draw.
As the season progresses, it will be intriguing to see if Black Notley F can maintain their unexpected rise and avoid the fate of Luton Town, or if the challenges of the Braintree Table Tennis League will ultimately catch up with them.
