Dominant China Clinches Olympic Men’s Table Tennis Team Gold
Paris, August 9, 2024 – In a thrilling display of table tennis prowess, China maintained their unbeatable record in Olympic team competitions, securing the Men’s Team gold medal with a 3-0 victory over Sweden.
The final was a closely contested affair, with all three matches going the distance to a decisive fifth game. The doubles pairing of Wang Chuqin and Ma Long got China off to a strong start, prevailing 3-2 (8-11, 11-4, 11-3, 6-11, 11-7) against Kristian Karlsson and Anton Kallberg.
The highly anticipated singles rematch between world No. 1 Fan Zhendong and Truls Moregard did not disappoint, with Fan emerging victorious once again, this time by a 3-2 (10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 11-13, 11-5) scoreline.
The final match saw Karlsson stage a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down against Wang, saving a gold medal point in the third game. However, the Chinese star ultimately proved too strong, clinching the title with an 11-9, 11-5, 10-12, 10-12, 11-2 triumph.
Bronze Medal Match
In the bronze medal match, host nation France delighted the home crowd by edging out a determined Japan 3-2. Simon Gauzy and Alexis Lebrun secured the doubles, while Felix Lebrun won a tense singles encounter against Tomokazu Harimoto, before Japan leveled the tie. It was Felix Lebrun who sealed the bronze, defeating Hiroto Shinozuka 3-1 (11-7, 11-7, 12-14, 13-11).
The women’s medal matches are set to take place on Saturday, with South Korea facing Germany in the bronze medal match, followed by the highly anticipated gold medal showdown between China and Japan.
