The thrilling Division 3 title race in the Burnham & District Table Tennis League came to a dramatic conclusion, with longstanding favorites St Lawrence emerging victorious over the hard-charging Blackwater D side.
The two-horse race between the neighboring river dwellers of the Dengie region went down to the wire, with Blackwater needing a strong performance in their final match against lowly Woodham E to secure the championship. However, the pressure proved too much, and Blackwater collapsed to a surprise 7-3 defeat, dashing their title dreams.
The St Lawrence celebrations could finally commence, as they clinched the Division 3 crown by a comfortable six-point margin. Woodham E’s unexpected triumph was led by the outstanding form of Peter Harverson, who recorded four wins on the night.
In Division 2, Maldon B confirmed their runner-up status with a solid 7-3 victory over Stow Maries D, led by a dominant doubles triumph and a brace of singles wins from each of their players.
The top-flight Division 1 saw a one-sided affair, as Cold Norton B romped to a 10-0 victory over their own C team. Despite the lopsided scoreline, the C team put up a brave fight, with several matches going the distance. The B team’s Eric Green, Ian Wall, and Sam Lowman all recorded hat-tricks in the convincing win.
Elsewhere in Division 1, Woodham B and Mapledene B played out an entertaining 5-5 draw, with Woodham’s Sanjay Saptarshi the standout performer, winning all his singles matches and combining for the doubles point.
This thrilling conclusion to the Burnham & District Table Tennis League season has set the stage for an exciting Team Handicap Final, where Cold Norton B will be aiming to claim further silverware.
