In a thrilling display of table tennis prowess, England’s Paul Drinkhall secured a commanding 3-0 victory over world No. 65 Yang Wang at the prestigious Saudi Smash tournament. However, the news was not as favorable for Tin-Tin Ho and Wales’ Anna Hursey, who fell in their respective matches.
Drinkhall (WR 121) showcased his resilience, rallying back from a 9-7 deficit in the first game to win four consecutive points and seize control of the match. He maintained his momentum, dominating the second game with impressive runs of five and four points, before cruising to an 11-4 victory in the third game. The 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-4) triumph sets up a second qualifying round clash for Drinkhall against another Slovakian, Lubomir Pistej (WR 90), which is scheduled for 11.25am UK time on Friday on Table 2. Drinkhall will be looking to secure two more victories and join his compatriot Liam Pitchford in the main draw.
“As the action continues at the Saudi Smash, fans will keep a close eye on Drinkhall’s progress as he aims to join Pitchford in the main draw.“
Unfortunately, the news was not as positive for England’s Tin-Tin Ho (WR 168) and Wales’ Anna Hursey (WR 96). Ho was defeated 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 13-11) by Serbia’s Izabela Lupulesku (WR 127) in the first qualifying round of the Women’s Singles, despite a valiant effort to save a match point in the third game. Hursey also fell short, losing 3-2 (11-8, 11-4, 6-11, 9-11, 11-9) to France’s Audrey Zarif (WR 106) in a closely contested match.
As the action continues at the Saudi Smash, fans will keep a close eye on Drinkhall‘s progress as he aims to join Pitchford in the main draw. The table tennis community will be eager to see how the remaining players from England and Wales perform in the upcoming rounds.
