Peruvian Capital Lima to Host Olympic Qualification Tournament for Table Tennis
The Peruvian capital of Lima is set to host the highly anticipated Olympic Qualification Tournament for table tennis from May 14-18. As one of South America’s largest cities, Lima is renowned for its hosting of major table tennis events, and this tournament is no exception.
The continent’s top players will converge in Lima, including representatives from the United States, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Venezuela, Guyana, Barbados, El Salvador, Colombia, St. Lucia, Canada, Trinidad, and Tobago, as well as the host nation, Peru. This diverse lineup promises an electrifying display of table tennis talent.
Headlining the event is Chile’s Burgos Nicolas, the world No. 51 and a former South American junior champion. As the top seed in the men’s singles, Nicolas faces a formidable challenge, with players such as Puerto Rico’s Brian Afanador, Ecuador’s Alberto Mino, Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes, and the United States’ Kanak Jha vying for the coveted Olympic slot.
In the women’s event, Canada’s Mo Zhang, a three-time Olympian, stands out as the top seed. With her wealth of experience and impressive Commonwealth Games track record, Zhang will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with. However, she will face stiff competition from the 25 other talented contenders in the women’s division.
