Table Tennis Legends Shine at ITTF World Masters Championships in Rome

The ITTF World Masters Championships, formerly known as the World Veterans Championships, is currently underway in Rome, Italy. This prestigious event has attracted a staggering 6,100 competitors, ranging in age from 44 to an impressive 99 years old, representing 110 member associations from around the globe.

Amidst the thrilling action, the English contingent of approximately 180 competitors has made a strong showing. Among them is Denis Neale, the last Englishman to win an individual medal at the World Championships, having claimed a Mixed Doubles bronze alongside Mary Wright in 1969. Competing in the MS80 category, Neale showcased his exceptional skills, winning all three of his group matches on the opening day, including a remarkable 3-2 comeback victory over Germany’s Dimitrije Bilic.

Another English standout is Betty Bird, who partnered with Marianne Blasberg of Germany to clinch gold in the WD85 category at the previous edition in Oman. This time, the dynamic duo has stepped up to the WD90 class, eager to defend their title. Meanwhile, Sandra Rider, who won two silvers in the previous tournament, is once again competing in the 70-year bracket, determined to upgrade to gold.

Standout Performances and Defending Champions

Lorestas Trumpauskas, who secured silver in the MS50 category last time, is now aiming for the top spot, and he started his campaign with three wins in the group stage. Additionally, Wales’ Mike Marsden is defending his title in the Over-40s Men’s Doubles, but with a new partner, Pawel Orzechowski of England, replacing Germany’s Gregor Foerster.
