Table Tennis Talents Shine at WTT Youth Contender Helsingborg
Young British table tennis stars put on an impressive display at the recent WTT Youth Contender event in Helsingborg, Sweden. Sienna Jetha and Max Radiven led the way for the GB contingent, with both players reaching the knockout stages of their respective events.
Jetha, competing in the Under-15 Girls’ Singles, topped her group and then staged a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to defeat India’s Ahona Ray 3-2 in the last 16. The talented teenager’s run eventually came to an end in the quarter-finals, where she was beaten by third seed Chen Min-Hsin of Chinese Taipei, the eventual champion. Jetha also made the main draw in the Under-17s, before losing in four sets to another player from Chinese Taipei, Hsieh Hsin-Jung, in the last 32.
On the boys’ side, Max Radiven’s journey to the last 16 of the Under-15 Singles was the standout result. Radiven and teammate Kacper Piwowar both progressed from the group stage, with Radiven defeating Piwowar 3-0 in the round of 32. Radiven’s run was halted in the last 16 by South Korea’s Kim Kanghyun, a lower-ranked player who went on to reach the final.
In the other events, Connor Green won his Under-19 Boys’ Singles group but lost in the round of 32, while Rohan Dani was unable to advance from a group that included top seed Tiago Abiodun of Portugal. In the Under-17 age group, Dani, Radiven, and Abraham Sellado all reached the knockouts, with Sellado falling to world number 34 junior Wassim Essid of Tunisia in the last 32.
The young British contingent’s performances at the WTT Youth Contender in Helsingborg showcased the depth of talent in the country’s table tennis program. As these players continue to develop, table tennis enthusiasts can look forward to more inspiring displays from the next generation of British table tennis stars.
