Spain’s José Manuel Ruiz and Slovakia’s Jan Riapos Join the “Club 8”
Spain’s José Manuel Ruiz and Slovakia’s Jan Riapos have both competed in an astounding eight Paralympic Games, a feat that speaks volumes about their enduring excellence. Ruiz, who made his Paralympic debut at the 1996 Atlanta Games, has collected a remarkable haul of medals, including a silver in the Class 10 Men’s Singles (2000), two silvers in the Class 10 Men’s Teams (2008 and 2016), and two bronzes in the Class 10 Men’s Teams (2012 and 2000). This Paralympic journey has been a cherished experience for Ruiz, who expressed his joy in representing Spain and connecting with his entire support system.
Joining Ruiz in the elite “Club 8” is Slovakia’s Jan Riapos, who has also been a dominant force in Para table tennis. Riapos won his first gold medal in the Class 2 Men’s Singles in 2004 in Athens and repeated the feat in London 2012, cementing his legacy as a true champion. His impressive collection of medals includes two golds in the Class 2 Men’s Teams (2008 and 2012), one silver (2004), and one bronze (2020). At 56 years old, Riapos is determined to add another gold medal to his trophy case, this time in a third separate decade.
