Team GB and ParalympicsGB Athletes Honored on Commemorative UK 50p Coin Ahead of Paris 2024 Games
On July 4, 2024, The Royal Mint unveiled a special collectible 50p coin featuring Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes, designed to inspire the nation ahead of the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Table tennis star Will Bayley, a 2016 Paralympic champion, was invited to help launch the coin’s design, alongside fellow Paralympian Funmi Oduwaiye and Team GB athletes Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Ruby Evans.
The coin’s design showcases an Olympic and Paralympic athlete standing side by side against the backdrop of the Union Flag, with a silhouette of the iconic Eiffel Tower at the base, paying homage to the location of the Paris 2024 Games. Each Team GB and ParalympicsGB athlete will receive their own commemorative coin as they prepare to represent the nation in their respective events.
“I’m a proud Paralympic athlete, so to have us as a team represented on a coin makes me feel special,” said Bayley. “It was a real privilege to be able to strike my very own coin and will be something that I remember for many years to come.”
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, expressed her hope that the coin would serve as a “special good luck token” for the athletes, with the entire team at The Royal Mint cheering on Team GB and ParalympicsGB.
The collectible 50p coin celebrating the achievements of these remarkable table tennis, Paralympic, and Olympic athletes is now available for purchase on The Royal Mint’s website, providing fans and supporters the opportunity to own a piece of history leading up to the Paris 2024 Games.
