November 29, 2024 | Diane Webb
The table tennis community in England mourns the passing of a true stalwart of the sport, as Harvey Webb, a beloved figure, succumbed to mesothelioma earlier this month at the age of 80. His wife Diane pays a heartfelt tribute, highlighting Harvey’s lifelong dedication and immense contributions to the game he cherished.
Born in Potters Bar, Harvey’s love for table tennis blossomed from his childhood passion for Subbuteo and grew stronger through his youth, playing at local youth clubs. His interests spanned various sports, including football, cricket, and cycling, but table tennis remained a constant in his life.
Dedicated Servant of the Sport
Harvey’s involvement in the sport went far beyond being a player. He founded a table tennis club at his workplace, the NCR, in the late 1960s, and soon became an integral part of the Willesden & District League, serving as the General Secretary from 1972 to 1976. His expertise and dedication were recognized, leading to his selection as an umpire at the 1977 World Championships in Birmingham, marking the start of his illustrious administrative career.
Over the years, Harvey held numerous influential roles within the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA), including serving on the Middlesex County Committee, the Calendar Working Party, the Grand Prix Committee, and numerous others. His crowning achievement was the introduction of a qualification scheme for Tournament Organizers in 1999, which elevated their status and professionalism.
Organizing Major International Events
Harvey’s impact on the sport extended beyond the domestic scene. He was involved in organizing major international events, such as the European Junior Top 10 in 2008, the ITTF Pro Tour in 2009, and the English International Championships in 2011. His tireless work and unwavering commitment earned him the respect and admiration of the global table tennis community.
Even in retirement, Harvey remained actively engaged, serving on the ETTA Board as Vice-Chairman of Competitions during the organization’s transition to Milton Keynes. He was also a member of the Swaythling Club International, where he held several positions, including Sponsorship Director, Deputy President, and Secretary.
“Harvey’s dedication to the sport was matched by his love for the game and the friendships he forged along the way.”
The table tennis community in England and beyond has lost a true icon, a selfless individual who dedicated his life to the sport he adored. Harvey’s legacy will live on, inspiring generations of table tennis enthusiasts and administrators to carry on his unwavering passion and commitment.
As a tribute to Harvey’s memory, a service celebrating his life will be held at the Hastings Crematorium on December 9, 2024, followed by a gathering at the Conquerors March in Hastings. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to HASAG and St Michael’s Hospice, organizations that provided invaluable support during Harvey’s final days.
