Table Tennis Stars Set Sights on Paris 2024 at ITTF Czech Para Open
The ITTF Czech Para Open provided a clear indication that the top table tennis players have their sights firmly set on the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. As the proceedings wrapped up on June 22nd, the event saw a mix of established stars and rising talents taking center stage, showcasing the depth of competition in the sport.
Surprises and Upsets
In the men’s singles events, there were a few notable upsets, with Sweden’s David Olsson, Norway’s Krizander Magnussen, and Poland’s Maciej Makajew emerging victorious in their respective classes, despite not having yet qualified for the Paralympic Games. Olsson’s triumph in men’s singles class 5, which included wins over French Paralympic qualifier Nicolas Savant-Aira, was particularly impressive. Magnussen’s victory in the men’s singles class 7 final against Ireland’s Patrick Vaughan was the only event where a Paris qualifier did not feature.

Makajew went on to claim the title, defeating Belgium’s Florian van Acker, the Rio 2016 Paralympic gold medalist.
Dominance of Paralympic-Bound Athletes
While the unexpected results added excitement, the majority of the titles were claimed by players who have already secured their place at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Korea Republic, Germany, Japan, Romania, Great Britain, and Poland were among the nations that celebrated success across the various men’s and women’s singles events.
Notably, the women’s singles events saw every title go to the top-seeded players, underlining the dominance of the Paralympic-bound athletes in the lead-up to the big event. Standout performances came from the likes of Korea Republic’s Seo Suyeon and Yoon Jiyu, Great Britain’s Felicity Pickard and Bly Twomey, and Hungary’s Alexa Szvitacs, among others.

The ITTF Czech Para Open also provided opportunities for athletes to showcase their doubles prowess, with several players capturing multiple gold medals. France’s Alexandre Saint-Pierre, Poland’s Karolina Pek, and Korea Republic’s Kim Junggil and Kim Gitae all emerged victorious in both singles and doubles events.
