The nation’s top table tennis athletes converged in West Monroe, Louisiana, to kick off the highly anticipated U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Table Tennis. This four-day event, the first of its kind held in West Monroe, marked a significant milestone for the community, as they welcomed the opportunity to showcase their latest sports facility to the world.
The West Monroe Sports & Events Center played host to 39 talented athletes (23 men and 16 women), all vying for the chance to represent Team USA at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris 2024. The top two women will directly qualify for the Paris Games, while the top two men will continue their qualification journey in May at the ITTF Americas Olympic Qualifier in Lima, Peru.
The qualifying play commenced on Thursday morning with Stage 1 matches in the men’s singles event. As expected, the highest-ranked 12 players advanced to Stage 2, which will take place on Friday. In this stage, the top 16 players will compete for the eight coveted spots in Stage 3, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
“It’s an opportunity for us to showcase our newest sports facility to the world and to crown a champion who will qualify to the U.S. Olympic Team this summer right here in our community,” expressed Scott Bruscato, the vice president of Discover Monroe-West Monroe, reflecting the community’s excitement and pride in hosting this prestigious event.
