The Road to Paris 2024: Table Tennis Anticipation Builds as the Olympic Countdown Begins
Paris, France – June 13, 2023
As the world eagerly awaits the start of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, the table tennis community is abuzz with excitement. This marks the third time the French capital will host the prestigious event, making it one of only two cities to have welcomed the Games on three occasions (1900, 1924, and now 2024).
Table tennis made its grand Olympic debut at the 1988 Seoul Games, with competitions in Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles. In 2008, the doubles events were replaced by a team competition, and the program was further expanded for the 2020 Tokyo Games to include mixed doubles, bringing the total number of table tennis events to five and ensuring equal representation for both men and women.
“I am thrilled as we kick off the 100-day countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” proclaimed ITTF President Petra Sörling. “This moment signifies the culmination of years of hard work and dedication from table tennis athletes worldwide. It represents not only the pinnacle of their achievements but also the beginning of a remarkable display of talent and resilience. As we enter into this final stretch, let us embrace the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship, and eagerly await the thrilling table tennis action that awaits us in Paris.”
The French capital promises to be a captivating stage for table tennis, with a total of 172 coveted spots (86 for men and 86 for women) up for grabs. The competitions will be hosted at the South Paris Arena #4, an exhibition and convention center that will serve as a major hub for the Paris 2024 Games.
- While some athletes have already secured their place in the prestigious event, others are still in the midst of fierce competition to earn crucial world ranking points and secure the remaining spots in both the Singles and Mixed Doubles events.
- With several events remaining before the qualification deadlines, including the ongoing ITTF Men’s and Women’s World Cup in Macao, the race to Paris 2024 is heating up.
